seriedad fallida con entusiasmo

Hola, thank you for your interest in my being-work. My name is Irene Trejo, alias Merma Suelo. I am a polyfaceted poet, researcher, performer and sound artist dancing and playing between layers to listen, understand, break and transform the living relational patterns-dynamics within ourselves and our environments with the intention of creating a more loving, just, playful and non-oppressive reality. My practice centres in storytelling, on the hydrocommons, vulnerability and collective liberation, and is supported by life, body–territory and listening practices, divination, plants, politics and more. I am a very curious being who has been gifted with many lives in this body, yet is now humbly trying to focus and commit on the chosen for depth and stronger bases.

Other People

Period Music is a collective process that involves Susanna Gonzo, Merma Suelo, Tuce de Alba, Elizabeth Gallon Droste, Agnese Menguzzato, and Farah Hazim, aiming to attune to the different rhythms, cycles and temporalities experienced through our bodies, using the menstrual cycle - periods - as their main inspiration.

‘Period Music’ draws from multiple meanings of period - from musical structures of recurring phrases to astronomical cycles, from the end of sentences to the Sanskrit word for ritual, r'tu, whose central meaning is menstruation and whose root connects to arithmetic and rhythm. Period Music has been staying with essential questions about how we listen to the rhythms in our bodies and in the world. With a focus on refusing the imposed speeds of daily life in an accelerated system, the collective has opened up co-creation spaces that challenge traditional narratives and work with embodied memories, stillness and grief. Through dialogues, improvisations, and jam sessions, the artists have attuned to each other's processes, creating scores, writing, drawing and sounding together to open space for Period Music rituals. This work embodies other notions of community through archetypes, seasons and spirals, embracing the impermanence that reveals the various rhythms of life.
